COMING TO THE PARSON
plaster, painted; height 22 inches
Signed JOHN ROGERS/NEW YORK
Patented August 9, 1870
The most popular, by far, of Roger's works 'Coming to the Parson' had an immediate and long-continued success.
Total sales, accaording to Roger's own statement, was about 8,000 copies!!
It portrays a shy young couple approaching the minister to make their marriage plans. The minister is busily reading his newspaper, quite delibrately named 'THE UNION". The young man points with his thumb to the shy young girl who hovers behind him obviously too reticent to take part in the discussion. A bit of three-dimensional humor is provided by the hostility of the young boy's dog and the parson's cat who have just noticed each other and whose dislike was intended perhaps as propheitc of the likely disagreements of the couple in the future.
The group has been restored and repainted.
