Item:223036075297Portrait of a Lady, Circa 1780Circle of Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder (1722-1789) Elegantly presented in a fine silver satin dress and cloaked in a sumptuous blue mantle, the sitter gazes at the viewer in a warm and confident manner. She is adorned with lace, a large blue bow, and shimmering pearls – accoutrements of the rococo lady and portraitist. The flesh is delicate and fine tuned and the artist depicted the ‘half smile’ masterfully. This very large portrait is contained in attractive water gilded frame in white gold. Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder (1722-1789) was from a German family of artists who between the early 18th century and the late 19th produced no less than 28 artists and artisans (a third of them women). The family were active throughout Europe and their portrait work contributed to the transition in German art from the Late Baroque and Rococo to Neo-classicism and early naturalism. Johann Heinrich was apprenticed to several artists, including his brother Johann Valentin Tischbein (1715-1768). An early and important patron, Count von Stadion, paid for him to travel to Paris in 1743, where he worked in the studio of Carle van Loo (1705-1765). Paris exerted a strong influence on the visual arts at the courts of Germany, so it was perfectly natural for an aspirant painter to further his studies in Paris. Van Loo was a sensible choice as a mentor, a painter of unfailing competence and intelligence. Tischbein spent five years in Paris then travelled to Italy before returning to Germany in 1751 where he was soon appointed court painter to William VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (1682-1760). This was a position he retained under Landgrave Frederick II (1720-1785) and in 1776 he was appointed professor of painting and director of the Kassel Art Academy. Through his activities as a teacher and his long career, Tischbein established a painting style in Kassel that was to influence several generations of artists until well into the 19th century.
