A large old Burmese (or possibly Northern Thai)  Buddhist Temple gong.

Made of hand-beaten brass which has been blackened. The decoration on the face of the gong has been achieved by scraping away the blacking to form the flame motif around the boss and the circles around the rim.

It has a fabulous sound with resonant tones and a long after-ring. Different parts of the gong give different sounds. The gong has great patina and a pattern of wear which suggests considerable age and long-term handling and use. There are some speckles of verdigris here and there.

The unusual "yoke" hanger is made of a dark reddish-brown hardwood. It is decorated with dark-brown and deep red wooden beads interspersed with dried sea bean seeds. I understand from online sources that seeds of this type are used in traditional medicine in Burma as well as in decorative folk-art.  All parts of the hanger have patina which suggest great age with rubbing and some scuffing to some areas. The wood of the main yoke is a little tired and dry and may benefit from a "feed" with an appropriate oil.  I have left everything as I found it.

There is small brass bell on the yoke which tinkles when the gong is struck or the yoke is moved by the breeze.

The gong hammer is made of a similar (but not identical) wood to the yoke.  The head of the hammer has a cotton covering over a rubbery core.

Whilst this gong was made originally for religious or ceremonial purposes it also would make and exotic and impressive dinner gong in the right setting. It is also good as display piece.

The going is about 30 cm (12 inches) across and has lip of about 5 cm (2 inches). The whole thing weighs about 1930g (4lbs 4 ozs).  This item will be sent by a Hermes signed for and fully insured service.

The yoke  has a loop for hanging it. It would originally have been hung from a roof, (possibly on the end of a chain) under an eave or under an arch or frame. It could also be hung under a shelf or on a wall on a long fixture.  Depending on the setting in which you plane to hang it, you will need to find a suitable hook or bracket.
