Leutmann, Johann George.

Halle: Renger, 1732-22.

Third edition of part 1, first edition part 2, foolscap 8vo (7” x 4”), pp. (25), (1), 2-106; (26), (1), 2-140, (1), gothic letter, 2 engraved frontispieces, 2 titles in red and black, 40 folding engraved plates and tables, several tables in the text, 2 folding letter-press tables in part 1.

Contemporary full vellum.

Good with darkened old vellum. Joints solid & binding strong. Old damage to small areas of the  vellum at lower back & on lower side near the upper gutter.   Sheets & plates with natural age toning, some staining, some plates frayed at fore-edge, but mostly clean & still crisp. One folding letterpress table with old repair.

[Baillie p.147-150; Houzeau & Lancaster 11595; Tardy p.163], “the first detailed treatise on clocks and watches written clearly and with thorough knowledge of the subject.” Leutmann (1667-1736) studied theology and mathematics at Wittenberg and in 1725 became Professor of Mechanics and Optics at the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. He published several works but this is his most important, first published in 1717-22 and including a useful glossary of terms. It is very rare, in any edition, with only 3 copies sold at auction since 1974.

Provenance: Signed on the flyleaf by Henry Voigt, 1738-1814, Chief Coiner of the first US Mint, who designed some of the earliest American coins. Voigt was a Phila-delphia clock & instrument maker who did work for Thomas Jefferson, and contributed to the cause of the American Revolution with innovations in manufac-turing machinery. The rear endpapers have pencil mechanical drawings probably in his hand.
