19thC A LA MARQUISE DE SEVIGNE Chocolate De Royat PARIS Cherubs Leather Box . The interior has a light blue fabric lining that is embroidered with a floral design. The inner lid is marked MARQUISE DE SÉVIGNÉ, CHOCOLAT DE ROYAT, ROUZAUD, PARIS. This is an original chocolate confectionary box from the French chocolatiers Marquise de Sevigne. WOW what a tremendous quality French antique box this is of the Victorian period. I thought it was a ladies " glove " box when I bought it and it was only later whilst looking at it I found it to be a Luxury Chocolate Box. To live during the period when this box was bought and given you would have had to be from a wealthy family. Who ever got this box has really looked after it well considering its age. This is an original chocolate confectionary box from the French chocolatiers Marquise de Sevigne. The wood box has a real leather design with a detailed gilt border as find on quality book bindings around the sides and lid top with a blue and white printed picture of 9 cherubs - putti in the middle. The box base is a stiffer blue coloured stiff card and has 4 raised brass pins in the corners as feet. The lid depicts a scene of 9 dancing cherubs playing instruments. The picture is marked d'apres PRUDHON at the bottom right hand corner of the cherubs. The interior has a light blue fabric lining that is embroidered with a floral design. The inner lid is marked MARQUISE DE SÉVIGNÉ, CHOCOLAT DE ROYAT, ROUZAUD, PARIS . You will also see the box front has a keyhole and a really fabulous GILT steel casket key of grand shape which works the brass lock fine. In collectable condition with normal signs of age and use wear. The exterior has some scuffs and the edges and corners are worn. The leather MAY clean and conserve quite well if you know what you are doing to preserve it and not to spoil the gilt tooling. The original inside is discoloured in places and has staining. I would imagine the box has been used for all sorts of ladies special things over the years and trinkets. It is a really SUPERB quality box which I hope will carry on through the period of time in other peoples collections. It measures approx. 14 and 1/2 inches long x 5 and 1/2 inches x 3 inches in total. It weighs approx. 600 grams. My stock ref: in the loft on BOXES shelf. This company is still on the go but in my opinion they do not produce the quality of box as this antique example. The company was founded in 1892 by a young couple Mr & Mrs Rouzaud and it took off big time in 1898. In my opinion this is one of the original boxes of that period. It would make a lovely box to put period French antiques in wouldn't it. Such as enamel boxes and perfume - scent bottles - bonbon boxes - needlework - sewing items, the list is endless.
