Musical + Qtr Chiming. 12 Bells, 4 Tunes A truly wonderful longcase clock which would rightly form the centrepiece of any serious collection. A genuine George III original musical clock playing 4 different tunes on 12 bells, additionally chiming on the quarters. Provenance: Sothebys’s sale of “Important Watches, Clocks, Barometers, Horological Books and Mechanical Musical Instruments”, 04 April 2001. Listed as “A George III good mahogany musical and quarter chiming longcase clock, John Taylor London" (lot 298). Guide price £10,000 - £15,000, hammer price £17,750 (plus comms). Following this sale in 2001 the clock went into a private collection of clocks located in Bath, SW England. The owner passed away a few years ago now and the clock remains in its original and complete state as presented to Sotheby’s. The chimes on this clock are truly exceptional. The 12 bells are tuned to the diatonic key of F# major and run through the octave up to a high C#. The quarter chiming runs on 8 of the bells and plays a longer pattern for each progressive quarter. The real magic, however, is on the hour where all 12 bells play one of 4 selectable tunes (“Air”, “March”, “Dance” or “Minuet”). These are beautiful melodies with lots of fast-moving passages and harmonies – by far the best I have heard on any mechanical musical clock! Minuet: Air: March: Dance: John Taylor is listed as a maker of high repute working from Gloucester St, London during the second half of the 18th century. He seems to have been a fairly prolific maker tending to specialise in fine bracket clocks. Longcase clocks by him appear to be rarer. The overall fineness of his movements is a consistent feature of his work. This clock is also quite rare for a London clock in having a centre ‘concentric’ calendar. This is a feature more often found on up-market Northern clocks. It does, however, make perfect sense for a three-train clock making the dial less cluttered and more elegant. There is a bracket clock by the same maker currently marketed with largely identical features (concentric calendar, subsidiary dials, shaped maker’s name plate, unique pattern hands…). That one also has 12 bells but only two selectable tunes. The rest of the clock is pure, unadulterated Georgian elegance in longcase clocks. It has a superbly figured mahogany case in classic pagoda hood style, the longest of long doors and exquisitely elegant profile. The dial is of a wonderful quality with silvered chapter rings and fine engraving to the centre and upper panels. The clock retains its original brass cased lead weights (one significantly larger for the chime train) and large-bobbed brass faced pendulum. The clock is fully working, complete and in a very nice original condition. The silvering still has a good colour with a little bit of marking here and there. It could easily be re-done but would make the dial look perhaps too new so possibly not at that stage yet? Personal taste I know. The movement has clearly been well maintained, would benefit from a clean at some stage but not critical. The case is very good with no issues. All in all perfect ‘collectors’ condition really. It’s a big clock standing around 106 inches but absolutely what you would expect for such a prestigious piece originally made for a big Georgian house.
