DESCRIPTION: This is fabulous antique mahogany eight-day miniature longcase / grandmother clock, which is of the most exquisite petite proportions. This movement is superb quality, the substantial regulator movement with deadbeat escapement, maintaining power, beat adjustment it also has two lovely brass weights and it has a rare Invar pendulum for accurate time keeping and unusual lozenge shaped pendulum bob. This is extremely rare to find in a grandmother clock which adds to the special quality of this lovely clock. The clock also plays Westminster Chimes at the quarter hours. The clock is made by Gillett & Johnston, Croydon, and it bears the bell makers mark on the rear of the movement. Gillett & Johnston were regarded as one of the best clock makers of the 20th century and later became FW Elliott. The clock is also retailed by the renowned 'Boodle and Dunthorne, 35 Lord Street, Liverpool' and the dial is signed accordingly. The case is also wonderful being made from mahogany which has a lovely patina. If we start with the hood this has a flat top which is finished off with a lovely cornice. The good door is flanked with reeded canted corners. To the sides of the hood are two glass panels which allow the movement to be viewed. If we then move down to the trunk this has beautiful full-length door which has a panel of thick bevelled glass. The clock is then raised on a plinth base. The eight-day movement, has a silvered dial marked with Roman numerals with small Arabic numerals above. The four corners are adorned with beautifully engraved spandrals and the centre of the dial has beautifully engraved floral pattern and a subsidiary second dial, it is also signed 'Boodle and Dunthorne, 35 Lord Street, Liverpool' . This movement is a superb quality being weight driven, and the substantial regulator movement with deadbeat escapement is maintaining power, beat adjustment. The movement is stamped with Patent No: 25242/20 (this was applied for in 1920) it also has the bell trademark for Gillett & Johnston. The clock has superb brass cased weights and it has a rare Invar pendulum for accurate time keeping and unusual lozenge shaped pendulum bob. The clock is happily ticking away, and on rods chimes the Westminster chime such that it chimes quarter of the tune at quarter past, half at half past and three quarters of the tune at quarter to, finally on the hour it chimes the full tune followed by the number of hours. There is also a 'STRIKE / SILENT' facility to switch the chimes off if required. DIMENSIONS:The approximate MAXIMUM dimensions are:- 71.75 inches (182.5 cm) high- 16 inches (41 cm) wide across the hood.- 10 inches (25 cm) wide across the trunk.- 15 inches (38 cm) wide across the base. As can be seen from the above dimensions this clock is of lovely slim and petite proportions. AGE:The clock is circa 1900. CONDITION:The clock is in wonderful condition as can be seen from the photographs. The clock is happily ticking away and playing its Westminster chimes at the quarter hours.
