Each drawer has fine carpentry ‘camphor cells’. Formerly used at Natural History Museum, London to house Rothschild/ Cockayne/ Kettlewell collection of British butterfliesA small ivorine plaque attached to door reads 'Rothschild/ Cockayne/ Kettlewell'; this proof of provenance, referencing that it once housed the collections of three of the UK's leading entomologists, increases the cabinet’s resale value should the buyer ever wish to sell. The majority of these came to the Natural History Museum upon the death of Lionel Walter, 2nd Baron Rothschild in 1939, and had formerly housed his vast collection accumulated over a period of 50 years. Hinged two-panelled mahogany door and lift off mahogany top and plinth (these cabinets were designed to stand singly or, by removing top and plinth, they can be stacked). Several of these cabinets were sold by the Natural History Museum by auction through Bonhams with a starting price of £750. Several (image attached of one auction result) achieved prices in Bonham's 'Gentlemans' Library' sale exceeding £2000 each. Mahogany of this quality is no longer available, and this cabinet as well as a functional unit, is an investment.
