The swan neck hood with arched molded cornice and circular turned pateras has full turned columns. The trunk has a shaped door that is flanked by full turned columns. The base is inlaid with square panel of flamed mahogany, which is surrounded by mahogany, and is raised on bracket feet. The case cross-banded throughout in mahogany. This case has been made out of the most beautiful figured mahogany of an outstanding rich color, and it has retained this wonderful rich color and patina. The eight-day movement with makers name of J. Jarvis, Whitchurch, striking the hour has a painted arched dial which is in totally original condition, subsidiary second dial and date aperture. The four corners are adorned with beautiful paintings of church and monument scenes. The arch contains a beautiful scene depicting Daniel in the lion’s den, which utilizes gilding in the background and guiding and iridescent paint for Daniels red robe to create a very striking painting. There is one J. Jarvis, Whitchurch listed in Shropshire Clock and Watchmakers by Douglas J. Elliott: Jarvis, John Whitchurch, 1842-1879. Clock and watchmaker, 7 Green End. 1846-1879 (D). Mary Ann Jarvis, wife, age 58, born Ashby de la Zouch, Elizabeth Jarvis, dau: age 24, born Whitchurch. Harriet Jarvis, dau: age 22, born Whitchurch. James. S. Jarvis, son, age 17, watchmaker. Born Whitchurch. Mary Ann Jarvis, daughter aged 15, born Whitchurch’ (C,1871). The dial is original to the movement and to the case and is in lovely original. The movement is very clean and is happily ticking away. The case is in need of a little restoration , as can be seen from the photographs there are a couple of chips to the veneer and some molding lacking to the bottom of the base, please see photographs for a full view of the condition of this clock.
