This item is from the personal collection of Marilyn Brass, who along with her sister Shelia, starred in the PBS Food Series, “Food Flirts”.  Marilyn produced that series and also starred in an episode of “Throwdown with Bobby Flay”. Marilyn and Shelia are also well-known culinary writers, having authored “Baking with the Brass Sisters”, “Heirloom Cooking with the Brass Sisters”, “Heirloom Baking with the Brass Sisters” and “From Grandma’s Kitchen”.

“The concept of ‘Food Flirts,’” Marilynn has noted, “is not just what you put on the table, but what you bring to the table.” Sheila has added, “It’s food without borders.”  The sisters are intent on sharing the multi-ethnic cuisines and cultures of America. “That’s what we should be doing,” Marilynn has said, “We shouldn’t be divisive. We should be celebrating who we are. Unless you are Native American, you had to come from somewhere. We honor everybody, and we have fun doing it.”

The Brass sisters’ story began on the North Shore in the town of Winthrop. They lived in a three-decker house on Seafoam Avenue. Their father, Harry, was the town pharmacist, and their mother, Dorothy was a baker and cook extraordinaire. On their website, the sisters write: “When we could barely reach the kitchen table, we were already turning scraps of dough into miniature braided challahs and jam tarts, lovingly brushed with an egg glaze to make them shiny.”  Sheila has described their mother as the “Cake Boss of Winthrop”.

The sisters never married and supported themselves in a variety of professional jobs. Marilynn directed communications for a laboratory at MIT and Sheila was a dress designer in New York and Boston for over a decade. They also both worked at WGBH. In their spare time, their antique collecting hobby turned into an avocation. Many of their collectibles, along with dinnerware from their mother and an art deco bench in the kitchen, are used as props in their books and on their television show.

Their antique culinary collection topped out at over 5,000 pieces and their collection of cookbooks was estimated to have been more than 6,500 books strong.  This piece was part of that collection and was acquired by me as part of the collection’s liquidation.  Many items from the collection were featured in Miller’s Antique Kitchenware Reference Guide, first published in Great Brittan in 2005.
