Offered here is a beautiful, very simple, stylized terracotta head from Mexico.  I do not know the exact provenance.   I got it in trade in 1964 from Rex Arrowsmith, Santa Fe’s legendary dealer in rare things, who thought it originated in Colima.  I have always disagreed with that assessment given the style and the fugitive white, red and blue-green paint.  I tend to think it either Jaina Island or possibly Zapotec.  The nose is not particularly Maya, but the elongated forehead is which leads me more toward Jaina. The figurine is about 3 ¼-inches high.  His accoutrements include a rather massive nose ornament, large ear spool and a head band.  The latter has fallen away on the front but is intact in the back and is colored the same as the nose ornament.  Given the way it separated, one can easily assume that the ornamentations were attached to the head, not integrally formed.  There are ghosts of eyes which seem to have been large, round and kind of target-like.  Whatever the origin, the figure is exquisite in its form, style and simplicity.  The number on the back is part of my own cataloging system. This will be a prize for the discerning collector.
