Here's a step up transformer box for low and medium output moving coil phono cartridges. This is an octal socketed box, wired to be compatible with the Altec/Peerless 4665 as well as the 4722 and 15095 (not recommended for 15095A). Using the switches, 4 ratios can be selected from the 4665, as well as the two available ratios on each of the 4722 and 15095. This unit includes custom made plug in transformers that have bases identical to the 4665, though the ratios for these are designed to cover low to medium output MC cartridges rather than the super high ratios the 4665 normally allows. The available ratios using the included transformers are 1:5, 1:6.67, 1:10 and 1:20. These ratios allow you to use most cartridges with outputs in the range of around 0.2mV up to maybe 1-1.5mV depending on the coil impedance of your cartridge. A chart is provided on the bottom of the box showing how to select each ratio. If you have any questions about compatibility please feel free to ask. This box uses natural transformer loading without any additional resistors. So the loads your cartridge sees will be close to the mathematical loads you expect from the transformer ratio reflecting the input resistance of your phono preamp. Assuming you have a standard preamp with a 47k ohm input resistance, the loads will be roughly 118 ohms at the 1:20 ratio, 470 ohms at 1:10, 1060 ohms at 1:6.67 and 1880 ohms at 1:5. I've been working on these transformers for a couple years now and am very happy with how they've turned out. I think you'll love the sound. One of the main criteria I've been interested in is making sure they're very immune to hum pickup, and they really excel in that regard. They're dual bobbin humbucking units, with internal mu metal cans, copper RF shields over that and the external steel can to further attenuate magnetic fields and help prevent mu-metal saturation. I'm writing "DB52065" on them because they're dual bobbin humbucking transformers with ratios between 1:5 and 1:20, pin compatible with the 4665. If you're interested I can also make these with bases specifically to fit 4722, 15095 or potentially other sockets.
