Item:192458833310This is an illuminated leaf from a Missal that was probably produced in the Southern Netherlands c.1475-1500. The text is from the Ordinary of the Mass and includes the “Agnus Dei” and the “Kiss of Peace”. The size of the leaf is approximately 335mm x 226mm (13 2/10ins. x 8 9/10ins.). ILLUMINATION AND DECORATION There are four two-line initial, two in red, two in blue, all with white tracery, the initials with foliate decoration inside and out together with similar forming upwards and downwards extensions all in purple and with green infill to set off the foliate elements. These are superb. In the bottom margin of the verso, in trompe l’oeil style, is a miniature of the “Holy Face”. It is depicted as though on the cloth of Saint Veronica, which has been attached by nails in the top, two corners. The cloth casts a “shadow” on the vellum leaf. The Holy Face is black with long black hair and a two pointed black beard and deep, dark red lips. From behind the top and both sides of the head come needles of burnished gold. The size of the miniature is approximately 45mm (1 3/4ins.) square. There was a cult of the black face of Christ, which invoked against sudden death, and was fostered by Margaret of Bavaria. It is especially associated with the ducal house of Burgundy (cf. M.Meiss, Late Fourteenth Century, 1967, pp. 201-2 and figs. 665-6). PROVENANCE Reiss & Sohn at their sale on 19th./20th. October, 2004, part of lot number 151 (3 leaves and 1 fragment from 15.th cent.). ORIGIN AND USE The style of the large initials is Southern Netherlands and the style of the miniature is not far away from there. The text is more problematical. The prayer “Hec commixtis” generally appears before the “Agnus Dei”, but it does come after in the Dominican Rite. The prayer “Habete vinvulum” after the “Pax tecum” seems only to appear in the Ambrosian Rite (which is Italian) and the York Rite (which is English) but not the Dominican Rite. More research is therefore needed to determine the Use. Please be aware of the condition of this item. What you can see in the pictures is what the winning bidder will receive. As can be seen, this is a somewhat dirty leaf with the miniature a little worn, this is none-the-less a fine leaf with superb initials and a miniature in a totally unexpected place. Payment by Paypal please. STANDARD SHIPPING INCLUDING INSURANCE: - UK - £7, REST OF THE WORLD- £12. In the event that actual costs are greater, no extra will be charged.
