WHAT YOU RECEIVE: A packet of 25 freshly inoculated hard wood (100% Schima Superba) spiral grooved dowels. These dowels are far superior to other Birch fluted dowels in the market. Please see further info section below. These dowels are freshly made and have been inoculated from my own fresh cultures (Please see my other items if interested in buying liquid mycelium) All mycology work has been done by myself in front of my H14 rated laminar flow hood (further info on this at bottom of this listing) to ensure contamination free.   I create all my mushroom spawn/dowels/mycelium cultures in very small batches so I only ever have a very limited stock on hand, so don't delay in ordering. If you see a certain species disappear from my listings, then they have all sold, and will not be available until the next batch is made.   I highly recommend using these dowels within the first 3 months of purchase, however at a push they could probably last as long as 6 months + if stored correctly in a refrigerator.   For optimum storage duration of this species - Please store in a dark refrigerator when not in use.    The sooner you use the dowels after receipt the better and more vigour the mycelium will have. FURTHER INFO The dowels are made from kiln dried sustainably sourced Schima Superba wood with no additives. Schima wood has two massive advantage over the standard Birch dowels you can purchase from most retailers. 1) It is much more dense and therefore is much less prone to softening and splitting. Many species can quickly decompose Birch making them more difficult to inoculate. 2) Higher water absorption of this dowel benefits all wood decomposing mushroom species of meaning the mycelium is much more vigorous   Dowels are spiral groove meaning unlike other dowels on the market - The mycelium is not "Knocked off" during insertion into the log you are inoculating. Size of dowels are: Diameter = 8mm  x  Length = 35mm Depending on the size of the stump or log you are inoculating you can enjoy flushes of wonderful mushrooms for up to 6 years! Please note the logs will take an initial period of around 18 months from 1st inoculating to first fruiting. Logs to be used should be freshly cut (up to 3 months from date of felling is classed as freshly cut) "freshly cut" stumps can also be used. Preferred species for logs are: Alder, Birch, Beech, Chestnut, Oak, and Hornbeam (Although success may be achieved with many other hardwood species)  apple, sycamore and ash are not recommended. Inoculation rate should be around 25 plugs to half a meter length of timber with a diameter of around 12cm or for 20cm diameter logs (the largest logs I would use) I would increase to 40 plugs per half meter length.   GROWING INSTRUCTIONS Note: A log only needs to be inoculated once. The mycelium will grow through the log decomposing and breaking it down over time This process will take the mycelium up to six years. During this cycle it will produce edible mushrooms as and when the correct temperature and moisture requirements are met naturally. (This can also be induced) Holes should be drilled into the log and the dowels are inserted into these holes. These "inoculation points" are then sealed with wax (Usually bee's wax) to stop the spawn drying out or being invaded by competing microorganisms.  The log bark needs to be dry, handling of wet logs is hazardous and the wax will not adhere to it properly.  Step 1: Drill 8mm holes 1.5 times the length of the dowels and about 15 cm apart down the whole length of the log. The second row should be drilled 5- 7 cm from the first row with the holes staggered to form a diamond type pattern (See picture). Drill extra holes near the ends of the log and around any branch or damage sites to over inoculate these areas (As they are sites of unwanted microorganism competition) Step 2: Insert the dowels. Dowels should be tapped with a soft rubber or wooden mallet until they are flush with the log surface.  Step 3: Immediately after step 2 - All the holes where you have previously inserted the dowels should be sealed with hot wax to stop the spawn drying out or becoming contaminated. Wax all inoculation holes, any damaged bark and cut branch ends should also be sealed with liquid wax don't worry about the log ends themselves they will be fine. Note: The wax should be really hot and sizzle on top of the spawn. Dont worry about this it will only kill a very thin layer on top of the spawn plug but most importantly any contamination around the inoculation site. Wax can be melted in a pot over a stove and applied with a suitable applicator such as a brush. CARE MUST BE TAKEN. HOT WAX IS HIGHLY FLAMMABLE AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS BURNS - USE PPE.  Step 4: The waiting period. In order to produce mushrooms can be up to 1-2 year as the mycelium must grow through and colonise the full log. It is important that during this time your logs do not dry out, become saturated with water or the surface of the log gets too hot. To achieve this keep your logs either in a wooded or shaded area, place them in a pit covered with tarpaulin or dark plastic sheet and cover with soil or wrap in black polythene bags and bury them or place under trees or shrubs. Step 5: During colonisation look for any significant cracking of the log ends, this indicates too much drying out. Remedy this by soaking (Fully submerge) in water for up to two days as watering alone will only wet the bark and not penetrate the full log. The length of time required for mycelium to grow through the log will vary from 12 to 18 months depending upon spawn type, environmental conditions, the size of log and the timber species used.  Step 6: Fruiting - A warm, moist (but not wet) area with good shade 70% shade and sheltered from wind is ideal. Lean logs with one end on a brick, rock or another log. Allow the vegetation to grow around and over the logs in the summer to provide shade and retain moisture. Do not place the logs flat on the ground. The first thing you see to indicate an imminent fruiting flush is small white nodes emerging from the inoculation sites (pinning). The good news is that mushrooms will then be ready to pick in less than a week. During this time you can lightly cover with clear plastic or fleece to increase humidity. Protect from slugs etc.. Humidity and Log Moisture levels must be maintained. With proper husbandry the average total crop can be up to a third of the dry weight of the log. Logs can also be 'Shocked' to induce fruiting by immersing the log in very cold water for two days. Do not move logs for one month before manually initiating fruiting. Shock by moving and totally immersing in fresh cold water (Use ice to cool if required) for 48 hours. After shocking, place your log back in the shade and lightly cover with clear plastic or fleece. This will increase humidity (85% is optimal) After each force fruiting your log will need at least a two month rest back in a shady corner until you can re-shock the log again. You can shock up to four times per year from March to November on warmer afternoons. (IE ambient temperature above water shock temperature by at least 10 deg c) RETURNS / COMPLAINTS
