Genuine Nantan Meteorite from China
Nantan meteorite with fusion crust from the witnessed fall in Guangxi, China 1516A.D. "During summertime in May of Jiajing 11th year, stars fell from the northwest direction, five to six fold long, waving like snakes and dragons. They were as bright as lightening and disappeared in seconds." The strewn field of the Nantan fall is approximately 8 kilometers wide by 28 kilometers in length, covering the towns of Lihu and Yaozhai in Nantan county, Guangxi, China. The meteorites fall exhibit a wide range of shapes varying through elliptical, flat-iron, semi-sheared, spherical, triangle, tongue and irregular shapes. The Nantan meteorite is an iron meteorite that belongs to the IAB group and the MG (main group) subgroup. The Nantan was classified as an IIICD in 2000, but was reclassified as an IAB-MG in 2006. 9,500 kilograms have been retrieved, the largest fragment having a mass of 2,000kg. Most fragments show strong signs of weathering due to the long time it took to retrieve them. The meteoric iron has a Nickel concentration of 6.96%. Please see images for the weight and measurements Nantan Meteorites contain a trace of Chlorine which causes them to oxidise more rapidly than other meteorites. This creates the red brown colour. It is not recommended to polish or cut, instead protect them by annually soaking in a mineral oil.
