An Original Norwalk Lock Company Folding Key.   Norwalk Lock Company, South Norwalk, Connecticut. QUANTITY:  ONE original Norwalk Lock Company folding key (and in really good condition!).  We had access to several dozen folding keys and only selected “the cream of the crop.”  We believe this particular key is likely from the 1910s-1920s. WHAT'S INCLUDED WITH YOUR PURCHASE: An original Norwalk Lock Company folding key (in really good condition!). KEY SPECIFICATIONS: The key, when open, measures  4.745” from tip to end.  The key, when folded, measures 2.6”. Closed, at its widest point, it measures 1.18” wide and 0.295” thick (at the rivets).  The key weights 1.0 ounce (28 grams).  They key is stamped No. 13. We checked this key with a magnet and it is ferrous (steel).  It appears the key is nickle plated.  The plating is in extremely good condition with only tiny, trace amounts of rust (that we noticed under high-magnification).   ABOUT THE NORWALK LOCK COMPANY:    According to DiscoverNorwalk.Com, "In 1856, a group of prominent local businessmen led by Ebenezer 'Eben' Hill formed the Norwalk Lock Company with Henry H. Elwell, (who owned a patent for plating cast iron keys). They took advantage of the emerging technology of coal power to build their factory and foundry on Marshal Street in South Norwalk, Connecticut (in a location convenient to both rail and water transportation). They manufactured many types of locks and keys (along with doorknobs, door hardware and apple paring machines). Near the end of the Civil War, the owners of the Norwalk Lock Company, (possibly responding to the threat of Yale and Towne’s pin tumbler lock with its smaller key and more secure mechanism?), saw an opportunity to start a related business nearby. They purchased the Dwight Company which had been manufacturing steam pumps in South Norwalk since 1860. Dwight’s pumps had become obsolete by 1864, so he sold the company and its factory to a group headed by Ebenezer Hill for $300,000."  They renamed that company the Norwalk Iron Works. During our research we discovered in The Library of Congress Copyright Office Catalog of Copyright Entries for 1940, that The Norwalk Lock Company was listed as a division of Segal Lock and Hardware Company, Inc. According to Locks and Lockmakers of America (by Thomas F. Hennessy), "Once one of America's largest lock manufacturers, The Norwalk Lock Company went out of business October 3, 1955."  The company was located in South Norwalk, Connecticut. In researching this particular key, we discovered the folding key was already being listed in the Norwood Lock Company's January 1874 catalog (along side their Model No. 1080 deadlock).
