It is hard to escape the legacy of the Punch Magazine. From 1841 to 2002, the magazine cast a satirical eye on life in Britain. It charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable resource not just as cartoon art and satire, but as primary source material for social   historians .

Illustration by Bernard Partridge., original, not a modern reproduction, pulled from the April 17, 1918 issue of Punch magazine. Condition : still bright paper, lays flat for easy framing, unrelated text on backside with some show through on facing side. May be framed

"IRELAND'S OPPORTUNITY." Irish-American (from the Fighting Front). "Say, you're missing the scrap of your life." Pat. "An' how d'ye know I'll not be in it yet, now they're makin' conscription voluntary?"

Keywords : WW 1, colonialism, Conscription Crisis of 1918, Irish Anti-Conscription Committee, Military service Bill of 1918, Irish Nationalism.

Background : The Conscription Crisis of 1918 stemmed from a move by the British government to impose conscription (military draft) in Ireland in April 1918 during the First World War [because of a desperate need more troops}. Vigorous opposition was led by trade unions, Irish nationalist parties and Roman Catholic bishops and priests. A conscription law was passed but was never put in effect; no one in Ireland was drafted into the British Army. The proposal and backlash galvanised support for political parties which advocated Irish separatism and influenced events in the lead-up to the Irish War of Independence.

Punch , a magazine of humor and satire, ran from 1841-2002. A very British institution renowned internationally for its wit and irreverence,  it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration.
