Item:332989924012An original, antique, copper-engraved map of St Louis Island, Senegal with an accompanying view of the defended 'Habitation of the French Senegal Company'. The map gives a birds-eye view of the small island and has a key identifying the significant structures. The engraving was published in Volume V of Churchill's Voyages and Travels, specifically in John Barbot's 'A Description of the Coasts of North and South Guinea; and of Ethiopia Inferior, vulgarly Angola; Being a New and Accurate Account of the Western Maritime Countries of Africa ...', published by Lintot and Osborn in London in 1746 (3rd ed). John (Jean) Barbot was a French explorer and trader employed by the Company of Senegal or Royal Company of Africa, who made two voyages to West Africa in 1678 and 1681. Following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 the protestant Barbot fled to England where he died in Southampton in 1712. The map measures approximately 155mm x 115mm and the view measures approximately 155mm x 105mm with margins beyond, blank verso. Condition report: Good condition, light toning as is common.
