Charming pair of small hand carved bears with hand painted details on face and paws. One has a label attached: Made in Japan, Ainu Product, S. Takahashi L.A.  Beautifully carved around the concentric circles of the wood rings, centered on each bear's nose and radiating outward, simple but very nice form. The Ainu people of the northern area around Hokkaido Japan have a long and complicated history; the Wikipedia entry is long and very informative. The bear holds a special place in their culture, as it does among many indigenous peoples. These are probably produced as souvenirs. Larger bear is not quite 3.25" tall, the smaller is slightly under 3".
