A beautiful pair of antique round baluster shaped Doulton Lambeth stoneware vases decorated with Doulton and Slater's patent. The middle section of the bodies are decorated with the patented technique of the lace overlay pattern which is sometimes referred to as Chine ware by some collectors.

These lovely vases have their feet decorated with a brown glaze with a gold band at the top of the curved quadrant. Above this is a brown marbleised section followed with another gold band at the top. Next is a blue & olive marbleised section with a beaded band and an gilded line. Above this is the main body of the vase which is heavily embossed on a buff or light brown ground with a floral design in gold gilt, white and turquoise enamelled flowers. The upper section or shoulder of the vase is the reverse of the bottom - blue & olive marble, brown marble and then a mottled olive green rim and interior.

John Slater (1844 - 1914) was the Art Director at Doulton & Co. Burslem from 1887 until his death in 1914. He was born in Derby and studied at the Stoke-on-Trent School of Design. He was apprenticed and worked at Minton as a painter under Joseph-Francois-Leon Arnoux. He became Art Director at Pinder, Bourne & Co and also at Doulton and Co. As well as being a painter, Slater was involved in the development of many of the special glazes and techniques which includes . "Doulton & Slaters Patent", a process which involves the use of lace fabrics impressed into the surface of clay as a decorative technique.

These vases are very well marked each having impressed incised and painted marks. The painted pattern mark X5336 (1897 - 1902) one with the painter's mark we think LP, for Lily Partington the other HH for Edith Harapath and the incised decorator's mark on each LB for LF Bowen. Each are impressed Doulton Lambeth England and Doulton and Slaters patent.

These lovely antique Doulton Lambeth vases are in excellent antique condition. There are no chips, cracks nor restoration. A beautiful pair that would grace any interior. They date from the late Victorian period of the nineteenth century circa 1897.
