Papua New Guinea Wood Stool Upper Sepik River Carvings.
Believed to be from the Waskuk Hills of the Upper Sepik Region of Papua New Guinea.
This stool resided in the men's house and was used by the master carver to work and carve on, and was carved out of a single piece of wood. Ceremonial stools were considered very special and sacred and used for special spiritual carvings.
This stool has clan symbols and markings on the sides and seat.
The stool was traded in the 1960s with indigenous people before returning to the UK.
