Seller: slimstyl (1,326) 100%, Location: New York, New York, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 183690713791 This is a 4.5" x 2" Pre-Columbian black jade celt / axehead from the Mayan Classic Period (250 - 900 A.D.). It originates from the Peten region of present-day Guatemala. This particular celt is medium-to-large-sized and well-polished throughout- a solid, classic example. The blade is slightly dull and shows heavy use. These celts were crafted from the black (actually very dark green) jade indigenous to the region. Jade is harder than steel, and this piece was formed by using other jade to cut the stone into rough shape, then coarse jade pebbles in an animal pelt sanded it into its final shape. It was a time-intensive process. These celts were typically not used in combat, but to carve the stone stellae with Mayan glyphs. Provenance- From a U.S. foreign service family who served in Central America in the 1950s. Please see my other antiquities for sale (will combine shipping on multiple orders).
