GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a beautiful Pre-Columbian painted polychrome Vessel, from the Mayan culture, Honduras. Of all the ancient civilizations of the Americas, no culture has been held in more awe and has held more secrecy than that of the Mayans. Their artifacts are no exception, with Mayan pottery becoming synonymous with the highest achievements in the world of ceramics. They are famous for the wonderfully painted pottery made using polychrome coloring, usually red, black and cream, and feature bands painted with various geometric motifs, some linear in nature, others curvilinear, together with images of esoteric knowledge in the form of what are known as pseudo-glyphs, which are complex references to mythology. This superb example measures 5 inches in diameter by 6.5 inches in height (12.7 cm by 16.5 cm) and dates to the Maya Classical Period (300-900 A.D.). It was during this period when the Maya began using polychrome slip (diluted clay) paint, meaning they used three or more different colors to decorate the pots. This method of decoration became almost homogeneous for Mayan potters, thus signaling the beginning of the Classic Period when their achievements in the art form reached a peak of perfection. The pot shows wear consistent with a dating to this period, and generally is in very good condition, including an "in-culture" repair, rubbing, minor scratches, tiny chips and general wear showing on the inside. Guaranteed authentic, this gorgeous bowl would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics.
