Product Information:
`Racers' is a 1982 publication by Doug Nye telling the story of Williams Grand Prix Engineering up until that point. Frankly, if you know Nye and any of the history of Williams, that should tell you everything you need to know about this book. The book itself is largely b&w on matte paper with some glossy colour plates in the centre, and in a format halfway between a regular book and a coffee-table style.  Any motorsport book written by D.C.Nye is a good bet. He's been around the sport for so long and is an authority beyond reproach. His research is thorough and he lends his understanding to the subject matter in a way that gives you a thorough and accurate picture. It's true in this case too. Before the arrival of Saudi sponsors and Alan Jones, the Williams team had been unsuccessful triers for a long period of time. To outsiders, it was only a matter of time before Williams faded and disappeared into history. But to insiders like Nye, the efforts of Frank Williams had been heroic, but somewhat like tilting at windmills. Nye paints a wonderful picture of the means by which the Williams team propelled themselves from the pack of Grand Prix also-rans, to be at the head of the field. In the process of telling the tale, the author explores the history Frank Williams and other the key players in the team's success, including Patrick Head, Alan Jones, Clay Regazzoni and Carlos Reutemann. Some motorsports books appear to be a rehash of contemporary reports, but it is clear in these pages that Nye interviewed the participants to tell their part of the story, with large sections of quotes. Further, he succeeds in describing how this group of individuals combined to become greater than the sum of their parts. Having obtained a copy of Jones' biography by Keith Botsford, I was somewhat disappointed in its anecdotal style. Nye's book has an excellent chapter on Jones, and they way in which he weaves in Jones' progression with Williams, in many ways makes this a better telling of his path to the Driver's World Championship. Overall this is an excellent telling of the first phase of Williams' success in Grand Prix racing. It is a worthy addition to any motorsports library.
