We present a charming, antique half-length portrait study of a French national revolutionary of the let 18thC, a watercolour by Mabel Ashby (British School, late 19th to early 20thC).  The work is signed, dated and inscribed lower left ‘Paris. 1897’.  Very little is known about the artist, who from records worked in watercolours painting portraits and inspired genre scenes.  We think this study is likely a theatre character in a play.  A couple of examples of Ashby’s work can be seen on artprice.com, askart.com, invaluable.com and mutualart.com.     Presented in very good overall condition in a later frame, this painting will look fabulous displayed
