No key., Type: Ditty Box, Conflict: World War I (1914-1918), Era: 1914-1945, Service: Marines, Country/ Organization: Great Britain, Country/Region of Manufacture: United Kingdom, Details: Rare Antique Royal Marines Gibraltar Naval Carved Wooden Ditty Box/Sea Chest - For sale is this rare and stunning Royal Marines ditty box/sea chest probably dating from early 20th Century/World War 1 era. Should any Militaria experts have any further information, it would be great to know. - The top of the box has a Union Jack inlaid either side and a carved world map to the centre. Above the map is the carved word GIBRALTAR and the "Crown". Below is the Royal Marines motto "PER MARE PER TERRAM" (By Sea By Land). One cannot help wonder what this box has been seen and experienced through it's lifetime. - The front of the box has a small metal plaque, probably showing the Marines name, but, unfortunately, is too worn to decipher. There is a key hole above the plaque, but there is no key. - There are 3 slats fitted inside the box lid, the centre one being removeable to allow easy storage of papers etc. There is additional storage within the box - see photos. - The box was hand made by a real craftsman. The dovetail joints etc are perfect. The lid still fits perfectly into the base. No warping or movement in any joints etc. - Please see photographs and condition report.- Approximate dimensions of box; 30cm length x 20cm width x 15cm deep, (12 x 8 x 6 inches)Thank you for looking. NB Once boxed, this item will exceed 2kg which makes it expensive to send abroad from the UK. I have indicated approx prices only - please ask for an accurate cost before bidding. Postage and Descriptions I try to describe my items listed very accurately but am only human and sometimes mistakes occur. My items are from a large collection of vintage items some of which may have been specifically purchased for resale and some from my private collection. As such some may show signs of age and wear commensurate with a vintage item. I do strive to describe any faults. I photograph items before postage to record condition before carriage and in the unlikely event of damage on receipt appreciate a buyer providing photographic evidence of damage. I generally use Royal Mail second class. To cover the cost of packaging I add £1.00 for items under 1kg, £1.50 for items including and over 1kg up to 2.9kg and £2.00 for 3kg and over. I do not profit from these charges it is merely to cover the cost of the bubble wrap and boxes. I always package extremely well to ensure safe arrival of your goods. If you bid please do not leave negative feedback prior to contacting me in the first instance.
