Made to the highest of standards & designed to show off the wealth of the owner. The heavy, large, triple chain fusee movement, engraved to the dial & backplate with the makers name & address is in excellent condition. Running faultlessly & keeping incredibly close to perfect time. Playing Westminster Chimes on the quarter hours & striking a fifth gong the number of hours. Two large glass windows to each side of this wonderful clock show off the technical abilities of the maker as well as the brilliance of his ingenuity & capability. The clock & bracket together measuring a substantial 56 cm in height, 30 cm wide & 23 cm deep. John Walker is famous throughout the world for the craftsmanship & quality of his clocks, not to mention his incredibly collectable railway clocks, every one made to the highest of standards. As respected as he was, he reportedly received a single contract from British Rail to maintain over 7000 fusee station clocks, to each one he would add his name to the dial. Though highly successful, his career did not go without some turbulence. In 1865, his then Cornhill property, fitted with a 'thief proof' safe, was successfully raided by burglars, escaping with £6000, incl. 465 watches (just short of £1,000,000 in todays money). The following year he attempted to sue the makers of the safe since it should have been impossible for anyone to break into the shop & the safe in only 35 minutes, especially as it was sold as thief proof. Coined by the press as 'The Great Cornhill Robbery'. Dial & Hands The clock features a 17.5 by 14 cm silvered rectangular dial with elaborate finely engraved foliate scroll decoration, roman numeral hours, single minute markers & inverted triangle 5 minute markers. Conforming chime/ silent & pendulum regulation subsidiary dials to the top. The centre engraved with makers name, address & serial number showing - ' JNo WALKER ' ' 230 Regent St & 77 Cornhill ' ' LONDON ' ' 6302 ' With original blue steeled fleur-de-lis minute & hour hands & blue steeled subsidiary dial hands. Both the dial & hands are in very good to excellent original condition, showing slight wear & light scratching from use. Carved Oak Bracket & Clock Case The clock case is made of high quality, ornately carved oak in the neo-classical, architectural style that was very popular during the mid to late 1800's. Featuring an impressive two step, brickwork style base, six corinthian columns hold up the entablature of further brickwork, decorated cornice & foliate carved front, topped with a tiled sloped roof. To match the impressive structure of the case, to each side is a glass window to show the equally impressive movement in operation. The back door to the movement with original, working lock & key features a pierced metal fretwork sounding panel. The front door to the dial, though without lock, holds shut when closed. The glass to the dial & two side windows are faultless showing No damage, scratches or cracks. The original, matching, solid oak, architectural bracket shelf with twin brackets featuring smooth sweeping curves & deep foliate carved decoration is in fantastic condition showing no significant damage. The shelf matches the clock case's entablature with all round decorated cornice. Movement & Gongs The heavy, triple chain driven fusee movement with anchor escapement is in stunning condition for it's age & is entirely original. Beautifully clean, fantastically well looked after & runs faultlessly, keeping very near perfect time over it's full wind down period. Playing Westminster Chimes on four gongs & striking a larger fifth gong the number of hours on the hour. It has the added feature of a pull-repeat cord which, when utilised, strikes the most recent quarterly chime or number of hours. The drawstring is a modern replacement. The movement is engraved to the back plate showing - ' JNo WALKER ' ' 230 Regent St & 77 Cornhill ' ' LONDON ' ' 6302 ' Complete with Pendulum & Key. Although I believe the pendulum is original, the key is not. As far as I have been able to establish, the movement, gongs, pendulum, dial, hands, case & wall bracket are all original to each other. There are no unused screw holes or other wear to the inside of the case to indicate that the movement & dial have been married to the case. The case is unmistakably original to the wall bracket & the dial is unmistakably original to the movement. The dial shows no signs of having been re-silvered & is the perfect size & fit for the case. An incredibly rare & almost certainly, entirely original example of a John Walker of London, Bracket Clock.
