Handles on the sides and balsam compartment in the base. ( for keeping a coin for the donation box at church) Stamped with the master's mark on bottom. Origin: South Jutland, Denmark. This exquisite solid silver vinaigrette is called a Hovedvansaeg. It literally means head-water egg: an egg to contain 'water' to revive the senses. It was designed to store a sponge, wet with main water, which could be a form of scented water , for example rose water. It was with this type of box from Scandinavia that a young man indicated his intentions by presenting a 'hovedvandsaeg' to the young lady of his choice. They were a high-status symbol and young ladies kept them in their inner pocket and they usually were passed down to family for many generations. The Hovedvansaeg started surfacing in Scandinavian around 1700 and continued until 1850s. They were usually of silver with hollow-gilded cavities, so the main water did not attack the silver. The oldest ones are vase or heart shaped. A certificate of authenticity will be included with this work. Condition: In good condition. There are some minor scratches on its surface due to the old age. Otherwise fine with no missing bits. ( see photos) Very rare 18th century South Jutland Solid silver vinaigrette/ Hovedvandsaeg.
