about the artist
Robert Tanenbaum was born in Missouri in 1936. Though a gifted portrait artist from early on, he was untrained until he studied art at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. A fast learner, the freshman Tanenbaum was awarded first place in an all college portrait competition, and went on to earn his Fine Arts degree at the university.
Tanenbaum fulfilled a lifelong dream of portrait painting for galleries, showing a special penchant for Western themes that include Native Americans, working cowboys and horses. One indicator of the recognition he's earned for the care, attention and quality he infuses into his work is of no small significance to the artist -- he was greatly honored when he was recently made a blood brother of the Cherokee Nation.
In the course of his career, Robert Tanenbaum has executed portraits for a varied and seemingly endless list of esteemed subjects in the corporate, sports and entertainment worlds that includes CEO’s of UPS, Texaco Oil, SCE, Nissan Motors USA, a life-size full length posthumous painting of Howard Hughes for Hughes Aircraft, Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation and an internet industry magazines's top 25 Internet executives. The John Wayne family and The Franklin Mint commissioned Tanenbaum to paint 24 portraits of John Wayne at varying stages of his career.
It is no wonder that Tanenbaum is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society; is one of 22 members out of 1300 members to be nationally certified by The American Portrait Society; is one of only 350 that has been elected as an Artist member of the California Art Club and is an artist member of National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic. Robert Tanenbaum lives in Tarzana with his wife Trish and continues to paint daily.
