The Mojave Desert is rich in many metals and minerals, including silver and gold and this was proved when a huge number of mining claims were filed in the late 1800s. San Bernardino County is scattered with remnants of the once-booming mining towns.  Today, the area has become one of the most well-known ghost towns in Southern California.

Offering 2 TLSs from CHARLES T. TRYON of Bakersfield, CA, encouraging support from M.M. Small of Cooperstown, PA, an investor in Mojave mining claims.  Tryon was born in Batavia, Genesee County, NY. A number of his ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.  Tyron was a real estate attorney and an investor.

Tryon writes of J.P. Morgan’s investment in the mine, the development of the mine and locating new large veins and securing the title to their claims.   In his second letter, he promises great prosperity for investors as they mine an “inexhaustible quantity of gold, silver and ore.”

3 pp, 8 ½ x 11, June 21st, 1902, Tyron writes, “I received your letter of the 10th, inst. With its clear straight to the point ideas. I wish there were more people who could think clearly like you...It would not be so hard to get an idea into their head.

“J.P. Morgan has come into the deal for the big mine that I have been put after by an English syndicate. Now the whole thing will swing on which party the owners will have the most confidence in. I believe that we have the inside track this far as the owners are old prospectors who are more in sympathy with and have more confidence in such a man as McRae, my man here, who is also a mining man with them, than in those New Yorkers.

“The Brokerage business is going beyond my expectations. Such men as Morgan and others have given the business and added dignity that has given me the chance for making the company here a powerful factor in this state.  It will be a national factor. For I am convinced that this is to be one of the greatest investing centers in the country. Although we will always be more of a direct representative in bringing money in touch with the raw material than in handling the developed institutions we will for that reason hold a position of usefulness to the world of capital unique in itself. It will take years of work to accomplish this, but it is being accomplished each day by doing our work faithfully, conscientiously, honorably...

“The men whom we have in charge of the property at Mojave went per our instructions and searched for extensions to our claims, making locations where they thought there would be values. They have just sent in thirteen more locations that they claim have values, a few having splendid veins adjoining our original claims.

“They are getting ore from every variety found on the property to be used in the tests (final). We have found the iron necessary for fluxing...Things are coming our way in every sense. Did I tell you that a big electric company has let the contract for sending power to Randsburg for operating plants there and they go right across our property...It is an immense big proposition...The further we go the more it impresses me with the wonderful opportunities that it presents...”

2 pp, 8 ½ x 11, August 26th, 1902, “...While at the Copper Basin, where our claims are located, I was with the surveyors who were tying one claim to another and getting everything in ship shape...We also went further in investigating the last large ledge, discovered and it now seems certain that we have a good gold bearing ledge there and that it in a sense the mother lode along with what is marked on the map as the Mammoth which is the further outcropping of this same ledge. Do you notice that on the map this makes a big backbone running right through the middle of the Mill site a group of claims which are richer than the Peck group...

“You hit the nail on the head exactly when you said that the thing we want is to have the title perfect to the Majave Copper property and then to keep it unencumbered so that we may not be handicapped when the right opening presents itself to go on and get  the money to do our work in getting on a dividend basis without compromising our position as holders in it in the least. We have our title perfect now...All the powers that exist cannot get us to make a deal that is going to go in the least jeopardize our holding...

“Yes M.M. we have got a sure solid thing in the Mojave copper and it gets bigger every move we make...It will be the foundation for the fortunes of all of us and also for generations to come as it is practically an inexhaustible quantity of gold, silver and copper ore that it will take hundreds of years to mine out...Ease yourself about the future...The men in control are true as a die and the worth is in the property so that we are solid.”
