Seller: shipsrelics (2,948) 100%, Location: Dovercourt, Essex, Ships to: GB & many other countries, Item: 323923207989 M V DARRO. BUILT 1943. SOLD FOR SCRAP 1967. Ships Convoy clock with Zig-Zag alarm bell, dating from the 2nd World war is this excellent working ships clock, made by Henry Browne of Barking Essex, a superb 8 day running movement that when its switched onto alarm mode it will set the bell running when the minute hand runs over one of the silver buttons you see on the dial, instructing the helmsman to alter course port or starboard then when it rings again the helmsman would again alter the course thus causing the ship to zig - zag across the oceans hoping to avoid attacks from German submarines. After the war the dial was replaced with a conventual dial as you can see, we have restored this to as close as we can to the original warning dial and it works perfectly. The original battery was corroded badly so we removed the old batteries from the Ever Ready packaging and fitted modern equivalent of 6 volts but for all intents and purposes it looks as it should. In the photo frame you will see three pictures of M. V. Darro during the war and afterwards when she was painted white for her American voyages, sadly, in 1967 she was sold and renamed the Surrey and sailed her last voyage to Taiwan breakers yards. The provenance describes her last days, inside the case is more information on this vessel, not many of these survive today and along with the provenance makes this a unrepeatable item of maritime history.
