Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) DUNROBIN CASTLE. This fine mansion, the seat of the Duke of Sutherland, claims to be the oldest inhabited residence in Scotland, the older part having been built by and named after Earl Robin in 1275. The more ancient part is to seaward, and is in good preservation: by far the larger portion, however, is modern, built by the second Duke between 1845 and 1851. A suit of rooms in the sea-front was set apart in 1851 for the Queen's use, but never occupied by her till 1872, when she visited the Castle to lay the foundation stone of a monument to the second Duchess, her late Mistress of the Robes. The view here given is taken from the eastward, and in the distance is the height of Ben-a-Bhragie, crowned by a colossal statue of Chantrey's to the memory of the first Duke, who died in 1833.
