Great Northern Railway luggage label, in condition as shown
The Great Northern Railway was incorporated in 1846 and quickly built or took over lines around the route between London & York. Early luggage destination labels were large but settled down to around 73mm x 42mm, with the code 18. Those where the station of origin is shown, such as King's Cross & Doncaster, were larger. They also had printing dates & other information from around 1907, many with printers initials where sub contracted out , such as W. & S. Ltd (Waterlow & Sons), H-C. Co./Ltd. or H-C.G - Haycock-Cadle (& Graham)
Pre-grouping railway labels from England, Wales & Scotland date from before January 1923, when the GWR became larger and the LMS, LNER & SR were formed from an amalgamation of Companies in their area of operation. In turn these Companies were nationalised on 1st January 1948 to form British Railways. Stock codes may be shown, sometimes the printer and/or quantity printed and if a date is shown, eg: 2-98, 1/23, it signifies the month & year of printing or if 16-7-95, the day also, in the 19th or 20th century
