Showa Optical Gemflex Type 1 Occupied Japan 1949 With Case And Leaflet

The increasingly scarce Gemflex camera, a subminiature TLR taking 14 x 14mm pictures on paper backed rollfilm. Made by Showa Optical, Japan - this the early version from 1949, distinguished by the serial number plate and "Made in Occupied Japan" legend. It is complete with its original leather case in very good condition, plus the now rare original promotional leaflet which doubles as an instruction sheet.

Cosmetic condition is good and the camera presents an attractive appearance, although it does show wear and some degradation of finish commensurate with age. Chrome is very good throughout with light tarnishing in places. Black paint on finder hood excellent with very slight edge wear only. Leatherette very good with slight edge shrinkage, all panels seem to be original except the top of the finder hood where the grain appears coarser. Interior of camera very clean.

Operationally, the camera has not been tested with film but all seems to be functional except for the aperture setting wheel which appears seized - I have not tried to force it. Shutter operates on all 3 speeds plus B, film advance and spring loaded spool adjustment knobs are OK. Finder hood release button and back door catch OK. Sliding cover over red window moves freely. Glass of both viewing and taking lenses quite clean and clear with minimal haze, finder ground glass clean showing a clear and bright image.

The carrying case embossed GEMFLEX and MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN is in generally nice condition, largely undamaged and with good colour. Strap is complete but appears to have been repaired. Interior clean and snap fastener catches securely. Leaflet showing the name of the distributors Miura Trading is all complete and unmarked but is quite fragile, having been folded in multiple places and with wear to folds and short edge tears.
