Slavery, tobacco box, negro head wearing a crown, made from lead probably in the U.S.A., in about 1890 (photograph 1 to 5). This is a rare item, which displays the previous association between the use of slaves in the growing of tobacco.  Description: The tobacco box consists of two parts, a container & a removable lid, & was designed in the image of a young negro man's head (photographs 1 to 5). The young man has curly hair & detailed facial features. He is wearing a crown on top of his head, & a collar around his neck, items that probably had a specific meaning. The crown is decorated with several recurring features around it's outer circumference, while the collar has what resembles a plume of feathers hanging from it's lower circumference. The exterior surfaces of the tobacco box, except for the base, have been painted with black paint (photographs 1 to 4 & 7). The interiors of the tobacco box's container & lid are both hollow, which provided the room for tobacco to be stored in the container (photographs 5, 6, 8, & 9). The base of the container is predominantly flat with a slightly raised rim around it's circumference (photograph 7). The base provides the tobacco box with stability when placed on a flat surface.   The lid can be placed onto the top of the container due to a flange fitting (photographs 1, 5, 6, 8, & 9). The flat rim around the bottom of the lid, fits onto the stepped ledge around the perimeter at the top of the container. There is a small hole through either side of the lid, near it's bottom edge (photographs 2 & 3). These holes align with two holes through either side of the stepped ledge around the top of the container (photograph 6). The aligned holes are possibly there to allow the removable lid to be fixed onto to the container (photographs 1 to 4). Another small hole through the centre of the lid, & a larger hole through the centre of the container's base, were probably air or ventilation holes to keep the stored tobacco dry (photographs 7 & 8).        Condition: The black paint on the exterior surfaces of the tobacco box includes some small marks, where the paint has worn (photographs 1 to 4 & 8). The hollow interiors of the tobacco box's container & lid include some scratch marks on their metal surfaces (photographs 6 & 9). There are also some white & grey marks on the container's base, which indicates that the tobacco box may have been cemented onto a flat surface in the past (photograph 7). However, the tobacco box is generally in good condition considering it's age & previous use (photographs 1 to 9).  Dimensions: The height of the tobacco box with it's lid on is 17.8 cm, the length 16 cm, the width 14.2 cm, & the weight 14.2 cm (photographs 1 to 4).
