The idea of the Kouros (a beardless, athletic youth), Apollo has been variously recognised as a god of music, truth, and prophecy, healing, the sun and light, plague, poetry, and more. Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto, who has a twin sister, the chaste huntress Artemis.Medicine and healing are associated with Apollo, whether through the god himself or mediated through his son Asclepius, yet Apollo was also seen as a god who could bring ill-health and deadly plague. Amongst the god's custodial charges, Apollo became associated with dominion over colonists, and as the patron defender of herds and flocks. As the leader of the Muses and director of their choir, Apollo functioned as the patron god of music and poetry. Hermes created the lyre for him, and the instrument became a common attribute of Apollo.Galateia (Galatea) ...One of the Nereides, fifty goddess-nymphs of the sea. Her name means either "the goddess of calm seas" from galênê and theia or "milky-white" from galaktos. Galateia frequented the coast of Sicily where she attracted the attention of the Cyclops Polyphemos. The giant wooed her with tunes from his rustic pipes, and offerings of cheese, milk, and wild fruit. The nymph, however, spurned his advances and consorted instead with a handsome Sicilian youth named Akis (Acis). When Polyphemos learned of this, he fell into a jealous rage and crushed the boy beneath a rock. Galateia was grief-stricken and transformed Akis into a stream. Galateia was depicted in ancient art as a beautiful woman riding side-saddle on the back of a sea-monster or fish-tailed god.Paolo de Matteis (1662-1728) …A painter trained in Naples in Giordano's workshop. Paolo de Matteis launched his career in Rome by 1683, where he came under the influence of Carlo Maratta. He worked in Paris for the French court between 1702-1705, before eventually returning to Naples, in Rome 1723-1725, where he designed models for sculpture and silverware in his final years.
