Seller: commits (9,067) 98.4%, Location: Yucaipa, California, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 202686532631 We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our other items! This is one of the finest traditional carvings I've ever seen produced in the Black Forest. It is a truly remarkable clock, very large, distinctively hand carved, and nicely preserved. The clock was produced about 95 years ago in the Black Forest of "Germany" by "Kalix Herrmann." Little is known of Kalix but from what I can see, he is one of the finest clock makers coming from this region of the world. The clock is just gorgeous, shows little signs of use and has been well maintained. It is carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The front of a case looks like an intricately carved wooden grape vine with five, deeply carved, large grape leaves. There is a large, very impressive carved wooden bird perched into the vine at the very top of the clock looking as though he is ready to take flight. Another fancy carved wooden grape leaf is found on the wooden pendulum. The wooden dial has a black background and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy hands to point out the time. The hour hand looks original to the clock and I think it's made of bone. The hands too are the old style that are individually nailed to the dial, not glued on. There is a hinged wooden access door on either side of the case. Each is quite secure with a metal latch yet open easily to allow for any adjustments to the mechanism from this angle. And there is a large wooden door at the very back that is secured with two metal latches. The latches are the old style that look more like bent nails than a latch. The wooden door easily removes to allow access to the all metal, early rack style weight driven movement bearing the "Kalix Herrmann" name. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activities. The tall wooden whistle or bellow tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird with flapping wings opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. The bird gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled chime inside the case. When he's through, the bird returns to the safe confines of the clock, closing the door behind him. At the top of each hour, the wooden bird appears again and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock and closing the door; fascinating! I've looked the clock over fairly well and can't find any missing parts or damage and only little signs of use. The clock is absolutely gorgeous on display, works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well too. It is most impressive and a great example of old style Black Forest carving. It is an impressive size too measuring about 17 1/2" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 8" at its deepest point, and about 14" or so across the top. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of maintenance. There is an old service tag on the back door to help verify what I see. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We often recommend to our clock customers to have their vintage or antique clocks serviced at least once every three years. Doing so will keep a classic clock like this one, healthy for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clock is in a class all by itself and is certain to be the focal point of any collection. Any guests in your home or office will be more than pleased to see this rare German timepiece in action.
