A superb quality Georgian cased Mahogany Moon dial Longcase Clock of excellent quality and of Chippendale taste, dating to around 1785, and in full working order.

The case is in Mahogany, and of very good quality, the shaped case door in figured Mahogany, with original brass strap hinges and escutcheon (missing its lock and key, but the door does shut nice and snugly). The door is flanked by reeded columns at each side, and above the door sits a fine fretwork panel which carries on around the sides of the case (slight damage to the rear of the side fretworks against the wall). The base with a raised panel with inverted corners, flanked by reeded canted corners each side, and the clock stands on its Ogee Bracket feet at a very impressive 95 1/4 inches in total height. The whole case is extremely high quality throughout.

The superb hood with its swan neck pediment topped with its set of three turned wooden finials; the elegant horns are finished with turned paterae to the horn tips, and with its front panel inlaid with beautiful multi coloured scrollwork. The glazed hood door with its handle, and the door is flanked by free standing turned and reeded pillars to match those found on the lower case. The clock retains its original backboard with repair.

The brass and silvered arched moon dial is in good condition throughout, with just a small scratch near the "VI". The silvered chapter ring having hours represented by elegant Numerals, with an outer minute ring; the centre of the dial with the working seconds dial and fully working calendar aperture.  The top arch with the working revolving moon dial which has two moon faces and a starry night sky complete with shooting stars. The moon dial with the 29 1/2 day lunar calendar around its edge, and with the makers name plate engraved "John  Smith Chester" around the top of the arch. The dial is finished with its set of cherub head spandrels and steel hands (seconds hand has been replaced).

The 4 pillar rack and snail striking, 8 day duration, high quality movement is in good original condition and in full working order, striking out the hours on a large single bell. The clock is set up and keeping good time, as with all antique clocks it would benefit from a service at some time in the future. The clock comes complete with it's old weights and pendulum, along with a winding key.

Dimensions - 95.25 inches high x 21.5" wide (feet)

Faults; There are some cracks to the case door and bottom panel, the concave moulding below the hood has been poorly repaired in the past (not really noticeable until you look closely). The centre finial has (I believe) been reduced in height.

Overall a lovely and rare Georgian "Chippendale taste" Moon dial longcase clock of good quality and in full working order, ready to go straight into your home. Delivery and personal "in house" set up can be arranged depending on distance, please email for details.

Important Notice

It has been brought to my attention that someone on eBay is sending scam emails offering to sell goods similar to my goods at cheaper prices from abroad. This is a deliberate attempt to deceive, these items are all in my possession. They will ask you to send money to them, DO NOT, they do not have any goods to sell, you will never hear from them once you have paid. I only answer to emails that you send to me, and will never send emails to you offering to sell you goods at ridiculously low prices. If you receive one, please let me know and I will report it to eBay immediately. Because of these emails, I have now decided to make all my auctions private auctions so my customers will not be bombarded by these fraudulent people. Thanks.
