The clock is by Thomas Jarvis of London, a documented maker who was making clocks in London (St James) before 1753 and died in 1778 (Baillie - Watch and Clockmakers of the World Vol I) The case is in superb Mahogany timbers, and is of extremely good quality which you would expect of London clocks from this period. The long case door with a figured Mahogany front, with brass hinges and working lock and key behind the brass key escutcheon. The door is flanked by reeded pillars with brass piping decoration, another lovely and high quality feature. The base with a moulded panel with inverted corners, and the clock stands on its later moulded plinth at 87 inches in total height. The lovely hood with its Architectural pediment with various mouldings and detailing; the top finished with the original brass ball and spire finial. The glazed hood door with its original old wavy glass and brass escutcheon, and the door is flanked by free standing reeded pillars with brass piping to match the pillars on the lower case, and also with brass capitals. The sides of the hood with the glass viewing panes through which the working movement can be viewed, and the clock retains its oak backboard. The brass and silvered dial is in nice original condition, the silvered chapter ring having hours represented by Roman Numerals, with an outer minute ring; the matted centre of the dial with the working seconds dial with a scalloped edge,and working calendar aperture below the twin winding holes and the makers engraved cartouche. The top arch with the very desirable Strike/Silent dial which enables the hourly bell strike to be silenced at will (ie through the night), the dial flanked by spandrels which also adorn the four lower corners. The dial is finished with its full set of hands. The 4 pillar rack and snail striking, 8 day duration, good quality movement is in original condition and in working order, striking out the hours on a single bell. The clock is set up and keeping good time, however as with all antique clocks it would benefit from a clean and service at some time in the near future. The clock comes complete with it's old brass coated weights and pendulum, along with a winding key.Dimensions - 87 inches high Faults; There are the usual tiny chips etc, the second hand is a replacement, the case door hinges have been replaced and the old hinge areas repaired.
