Seller: charlie-farlie (3,472) 100%, Location: Stowmarket, Ships to: GB, Item: 254402184797 It is my husband's wish that I continue to overhaul, list and sell our personal collection of Smiths and other makes of clocks on his behalf, in the same tradition as he has done for many years. The quality of my work meets with the very strict standards of my horological qualifications, and as such I would not deliberately mislead anyone into thinking that any clock we offer for sale is anything other than an honest, original and genuine clock with the historical integrity kept intact (as far as possible), or that we give the impression that the clock is something that it clearly isn’t. This listing is open to UK buyers only. Sorry, there are no exceptions to this. Please read my notes at the end of the listing. Ladies and gentlemen, I have great pleasure in presenting from our personal collection, an extremely rare Smiths 8 day Bakelite timepiece (time only) wall clock. I offer you the “Durban” dated to 1954. The Durban had a mammoth production run from 1937 until November 1965. They carried the Enfield, Smiths and Genalex name on the dial. The bulk of examples of the Durban had electric 240 volt synchronous movements. It is incredibly rare to find one with an eight day platform movement! They were available in a vast array of colours, including the green you see here. The shape is the most distinctive and recognisable Art Deco style that was extremely popular, proven by the very long production run of this model! The clock is secured to the wall by a hinged support. The case is in remarkable condition and while in our care, it has been extremely well cared for. I have done nothing to the case other than to give it a quick clean and apply a couple of coats of a top quality polish that was recommended to me by a Bakelite dealer friend of my husband’s. It has not been “prettied up” for the camera and it does not shine more now than it did when it left the factory. This would be perfect for an Art Deco kitchen. The measurements for this fine clock (from the rear) are 6.5” square. The movement is the superb Smiths “QH” four jewel lever platform movement, dated to October 1954. This movement is a “rear wind” and has a vertical platform escapement. Timekeeping is adjustable via a lever, hidden behind a sliding flap on the rear cover. This clock was fully overhauled by my husband in October 2012 and at this time, he fitted a new balance staff to the platform escapement and a new/old stock genuine Smiths mainspring. The clock has never had any bush replacement carried out. Since its overhaul, it had seen occasional use as part of our personal collection and has performed faultlessly, keeping superb time. Because it has a platform escapement, the tick is extremely quiet. In June of this year, I checked the movement for wear (none found) and I re-oiled it to ensure continued reliability. The dial consists of a silver Arabic numerated chapter ring, set against the green Bakelite backdrop of the case. The minute track is very simple with individual minute divisions and five minute markers. The flat glass is secured by a chrome retaining ring. The black hands are the early Enfield type 24B. These were only fitted to a handful of models. The Durban is a model that is often seen in electric (Sectric) format but I cannot remember when I last saw one with a mechanical movement, especially in this very rare green case. This is certainly a clock that will enhance any home or collection. Notes This listing is open to UK buyers only. Sorry, there are no exceptions to this!! Please note that we do NOT use the eBay Global shipping programme. Some of our customers have a copy of a book called Smiths Domestic Clocks by the late Barrie Smith. In this book, some of Barrie’s dating differs to the dating in our listings. This is an excellent book for identifying and giving a rough guide to the dates of clocks but the book is just that, a rough guide, and a percentage of the dates in the book are incorrect. In the interests of accuracy, I date my clocks using original Smiths catalogues and other available documentation. Some time ago I fully completed my training as an horologist, just like my husband did many years ago. His verbal instruction and endless encouragement helped me proudly achieve this coveted standard, and I am indebted to him. Due to deterioration in my husband’s health, I can no longer offer collection in person as an option. Whenever possible, your clock will be securely wrapped in brand new bubble wrap and sent out in a brand new, double walled box and despatched with a 24 hour courier FREE OF CHARGE within one day of receiving payment. A tracking number is always provided and the parcel will need to be signed for upon receipt. Please note that I book my couriers through Parcel2Go. They require a phone number BEFORE I can make the booking. I would therefore be very grateful if you could provide this when completing checkout. Please also note that it is not always possible for the couriers to provide a next day delivery to customers in all locations, especially in Scotland, Northern Ireland or outside the mainland UK. Most of the clocks that I offer for sale are a minimum of 50 years old and by their very nature will have the odd minor marks here and there that would be totally commensurate with their age. I will always point out anything untoward and while I always provide several photographs in the description, I am always happy to provide more images should you require them. I can always be contacted by e-mail, phone or Skype should you encounter any problems either with the setting up or at any time in the future. I will always be delighted to assist you in any way I possibly can. So please bid with total confidence and you can rest assured of the very best in after care service should you ever need it. If you have any questions, please ask AT LEAST 18 hours before the listing ends!!!
