Superb Hard-to-Find Vintage OMC (Otagiri Mercantile Co.) Brutalist Mid-Century Pottery - Japanese Ikebana Tripod Vase

Great Vintage Piece of Highly Desirable Brutalist Pottery by OMC (Otagiri Mercantile Co.) – the Japanese Ikebana Vase in a Cool Mid-Century Tripod Design.  Brutalism is a mid-20th century design style for fashion, architecture, etc., etc.  The style is often associated with utopian ideas, such as, a utilitarian feel, a monochromatic palette, a lack of ornamentation, simple graphic lines, and bold geometric forms.  And this Japanese Ikebana Tripod Vase certainly possesses all those qualities!

For example, the three simple, narrow tubular columns extend down to a point to form a three-legged base (remember the sound mathematical principle of the 3-legged stool).  Each column or vase is joined in the middle with upper and lower geometric extensions, such that the vases are not equidistant from one another.  So it forms an isosceles triangle of sorts where 2 vases are 5.5" across from the third vase while the shortest width is 4.75" across the other two vases - and the height is 8.25”.  OK, enough of the math lesson already……

The vase has an unrefined monochrome seafoam glaze (they are more of a greenish blue than my pics show) over a few tiny imperfections that separate the glaze from the clay.  It’s a Natural Mid-Century Brutalist Form that fuses perfectly with the Otagiri Japanese Ikebana Tripod Vase .  Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging that originated in ancient Japan.  It is a centuries-old practice that involves arranging flowers, greenery, and other flora to convey a specific feeling or emotion.  It’s not simply about arranging flowers, but creating a harmonious relationship between the natural materials used in the arrangement and the space around them.  The key is to express the beauty of flowers by arranging them without precise symmetry, highlighting their natural form and substance.

Anyway, I just wanted to give a brief overview of what this wonderful piece represents - it is not my style, by any means, as you can see from what I normally sell, but I can truly appreciate its form and what it represents to many who embrace its style.

The Tripod Vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs.  The OMC label is no longer present on the bottom, and although this vase is not often found, it has been documented in a couple of prior auctions as an Otagiri piece.  This Japanese Ikebana Tripod Vase would be an awesome addition to anyone’s Mid-Century Modern or Brutalist Décor, or at the very least, be a very unique addition to your pottery collection. I doubt you will find many pieces like this vase out there!
