Brinkley VERY RARE. PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE BOOK. MY IMAGES INCLUDE MULTIPLE SHOTS COMBINED TO GIVE YOU AS MUCH OF A VIEWING OF THE BOOK AS POSSIBLE GIVEN EBAY PHOTO LIMITS.

Let me begin quickly with a disclaimer to get it out of the way. This auction if for a SINGLE BOOK. Several photos show more than one image to give you as much information as I can for the single book being sold. Despite some photos showing as many as eight different images, there are not eight books. There is only one book. (For those who did not see the necessity of that, I apologize, but you have no idea.)

This is an oversized (10" x 14.5") and very rare slice of Japan from 1906. I could not tell you how many of these photos reflect things that no longer exist. Several pages have soiling and discoloring and others have short tears that were professionally repaired as described below. There remain a number of small nicks (under 1/3 inch) here and there on page edges.

The book does have some condition issues so please read carefully and look at the photos as described below. When all is considered, the condition is very good.

1- The outer boards are original with original silk ties. All are fully attached as the original construction did include supporting cloth on the inside of the hinges but the boards themselves are split at the hinges. There is fraying of the cloth and some minor loss of cloth at the edges. there is some staining to covers. (Photo 1 & 9). Covers are shaky but remain fully attached

2- Photo 2 shows the title page and facing page in Japanese which has a purple stamp. That facing page has significant creasing, nicks and chipping to the edges and two large chips of missing paper (This is one of only two pages with missing paper)

3- Photo 3 is the copyright page and introduction by F. Brinkley. I believe that this is Captain Frank Brinkley. He is known for several publications around this time. He was an Irish newspaper owner who authored numerous books on Japanese culture

4- Shows different page layouts. Most have a description in a box in English and one in Japanese that is opposite the photo. Several military personnel and politicians or Royalty were in different layouts.

5- Photo 5 Page on the left shows the introduction of Bokujo Koizumi. The ink marks mirror the opposite page which is the only page with markings that were not published with the book. Two of the four women on the opposite page have English language names written over their bodies. (Patricia and Doris). I cannot be certain but they do appear to be autographs, as opposed to some unknown names written for an unknown reason.

6- Photo 6 & 7 just show some of the unusual types of "slice of life" photos- A Dance of the Natives of Formosa, A Carpenter, Strolling Musicians and The Theatre (I like the frog). Please note the photo on the right of Photo 6 titled The Carpenter. There is a repaired tear in the margin above the three vertical planks on the left and one below the letter "A" in the photo title. While they were at one time tears, they are now effectively creases as there is no paper separation and no tape. There are numerous pages with this type of repair. I only noted that they were repaired tears instead of simply creases because of small spots of reflection under certain light that suggests glue.

7- Photo 8 has Eight examples of the types of photographs. Temples, volcanoes, farmers...

8- Photo 9 is the rear cover  (at least from my point of view, even though it is actually the inside of the cover printed with the title) and the first of several pages of Japanese script only with two pages having red (chop marks?). This being the first page in, it is soiled and has a vertical crease. The first few pages at this end have dog eared corner creases.

9- Photo 10 is an additional grouping of images

10- Photo 11 shows a Buddhist funeral and a woman selling insects. In the top margin of the insect seller, just over the center woman's head, is another repaired tear. These repairs are so good, they have to be pointed out. There is also soiling here, which is not uncommon in this book.

11- The last photo shows the only page with an image on it that has unrepaired and quite irreparable damage. The upper corner is gone and it just slightly enters the image. There is an additional tear in that page that was not repaired. This is the only page with a tear longer than 1/3 inch that was not repaired with the exception of the page facing the title page as described in number 2 above.

So, I have done my best here. I again stress that there is light soiling throughout and the occasional moderate spots. There are numerous short tears repaired with the vast majority not noticeable without proper light reflection. There are even some longer tears repaired where the tear may have entered the image. There is the occasional page with a vertical crease and there are handling creases EVERYWHERE throughout the book.

From the rear inwards, I counted 44 photos of singular people, two per page. Then there are 184 photos from specific prefectures and another 40 or so that include the firemen, wrestler, insect dealer, carpenter, singers, lantern maker, etc. So that is at least 268 photos.

THERE IS A CONTENTS SECTION THAT DOES DESCRIBE EVERY PHOTO AND FROM WHICH PREFECTURE IT CAME.

Obviously, if it is not as described, it can be returned.

For International Buyers:  Media Mail shipments only. Please note that, although you are likely paying very high shipping costs to have this item sent to you, I am not charging those costs. In the case of books, I utilize "media mail" to get the box to the third party shipper. "Media mail" is a very SLOW speed mailing process reserved for books and records that are potentially very heavy. If you can not wait for my shipment to reach the third party shipper at a very slow pace, please contact me before purchasing and I can add a faster (and more expensive) alternative to the listing to get the item to the third party shipper.

MEDIA MAIL: The USPS allows books, records and other media to be mailed at a cheaper price than typical mail. It tends to be a much slower mailing process than standard mail. In addition, any employee of the USPS can open the package at ANY time for ANY reason to verify that what is inside is what should be inside. In most cases, the item is properly repackaged but, in rare cases, it is not and an item can arrive damaged. As my feedback suggests, I package very carefully. If you receive a damaged item that has the appearance of having been poorly packaged, please contact me prior to leaving feedback so that it can be addressed.
