Seller: randall977 (1,662) 100%, Location: Wantage, Ships to: Free Local Pickup, Item: 201935913304 Age: Antique, Pre-1900, Type: Longcase/ Grandfather Clock, Style/ Origin/ Theme: Georgian, Material: Mahogany, Details: This is a very rare and unusual George III Mahogany 8 Day three train musical longcase clock by Jam's Thwaites, London (c.1780 - Brian Loomes / James Thwaites, Ratcliff Highway 1768-90 - Baillie). It is likely that James belonged to the well known Thwaites family of clockmakers (Thwaites & Reed), the distinctive pillars are identical to those found on other Thwaites clocks of the period. It plays 6 different tunes (one on the hour) via a large pinned barrel with 15 hammers on 8 bells and strikes on a further 9th bell. The substantial 5 pillar movement (powered by three brass cased weights) has recently been rebuilt and is in good working order. The cylinder has no missing pins and the clock keeps excellent time - I have not had to adjust it for several months. The 13" brass face with Rococo style spandrels has a date aperture, seconds subsidiary dial, tune selector and silent / strike selector, whilst inside are separate repeat pulls for both the chime and strike. The mahogany case is free from rot and the hood has been very carefully restored to a high standard, the only fault is the solid mahogany flame veneered truck door which has historic warping and has been reset at some point in the past. Maximum dimensions are; 89" High (92" with finials), 22" Wide, 11" Deep. The 6 tunes are as follows (three can be seen playing by clicking on the video link); 1. Belisle March2. Lady Coventry's Minuet - https://youtu.be/scNeqkuQqNY 3. Fools Minuet - https://youtu.be/sXd4LQd_qYI 4. Lovely Nancy - https://youtu.be/LHp_GOr97ko 5. Panting 6. The Sorcerer The clock will need to be collected from Wantage near Oxford and set up in it's new home by someone who is competent and experienced.
