If you are interested in this car, please read this through to the end.
I bought this car in November 2012, actually as a car for parting out as I had already had a Stag under restoration and this seemed a good way of getting parts. However, when I had a close look when I got home, with a bit of welding it was through the MoT and I had it on the road for a few years. It developed a few niggles, the main one being that the gearbox would jam up solid. I got very adept at removing the gear lever and using a screwdriver to free it off, I also had the occasional smell of petrol and the brakes were losing efficiency, so it was garaged for a while. Work got very busy and I was away from home a lot and over the winter the clutch plate sized on the flywheel. Despite all the usual remedies, I failed to release it and in the process the master cylinder went. Work was still busy, so it was left.
Eventually (like a number of us) I realised I had too many cars, so the stag under restoration was sold and that then paid for this one to go into the garage an have the gearbox removed, which I brought home and dismantled the selector assembly and found that a pin was missing that prevented gears being selected simultaneously. Whilst in pieces I measured the float of the key shafts and all was good. It was put back in the car with a new clutch. The brake master cylinder was replaced and a new aluminium radiator as well as a new alternator was fitted. It starts easily and ticks over.
Whilst at the garage, I asked for their opinion on the general condition of the car and they said they could see no major issues (whilst not a specialist Stag garage, the owner was familiar with Stags having had a number through to repair, including an accident damaged body swap) so I am happy he know when he is talking about – it is of course the responsibility for any buyer to satisfy themselves and not take my word for it!
It is registered as a Historic Vehicle (no Road Tax to pay and no MoT required - but it must be roadworthy!)
So, in summary
Good Points
The Bad Points
It’s no oil painting, there are many shades of white and this car has most of them, lost of rust spots, some rust to the boot and hard top, but not at a point I think they are past redemption. The front passenger wheel arch has had an impact, but no rust, just needs straightening. The carbs will occasionally overflow, the brakes need fettling. I do have the remaining wheel trims, but two are missing one of the false nuts. The tacho works, but not the voltmeter, fuel gauge or temperature gauge. Indicators work, hazards don’t. Side lights work, one dipped beam is out. The horn and windscreen wipers work!
So, this is a rolling restoration.
