UNIQUE large old 1914 Hipp toggle type electric clock golden oak 6ft 2" trams. This is an unusual old electric clock made by or for Archibald Robert Dayson who was General Manager for Sunderland Corporation from 1904 to his untimely death in 1928.The clock is dated 1914 so may have been a presentation piece on the tenth anniversary of employment.He trained at Ferranti and then went as Electrical Engineer with Plymouth Corporation. He was best remembered at Sunderland for his designs of their electric tramway system and for his efforts to keep them running throughout the first world war when both men and materials were in short supply. It is quite a simple looking mechanism which I am sure you electric clock people will understand.It has a Hipp toggle mechanism. I am told it is all complete except for a power source and again told it should run on 1.1/2 volt batteries but I don`t know if this is correct so I am selling the clock as requiring attention. It stands approx six feet two inches tall by fifteen inches wide at top and eight inches deep. The solid oak case is a nice golden colour and is in good condition with heavy bevelled glass to front and sides. The 10 1/2" diameter dial is of heavy gauge brass which has been silvered(worn ) and etched with roman numerals and inscribed A R Dayson 1914. The cast brass bezel is good quality and has heavy polished edge glass. The minute and hour hands are original but the second hand is a replacement and is not attached to the movement.(it needs the thin brass pipe to attach it to the seconds arbour.) I am sure someone will be able to get it going and it would be a great addition to a collection. Just to add to description, the rear of the top was fitted with a battery type movement when I bought the clock, luckily the original movement was in a plastic bag in the bottom of the case, The rear of the clock was roughly modified to take the battery movement , so from the rear it looks a bit unsightly, none of the alterations can be seen with the door closed.
