Moon, Tide, Date + Month Longcase clocks have been my hobby for many years now and I have seen a lot! This is, without doubt, one of the most unusual clocks I have come across and regardless of its history will remain a major topic of conversation for many years to come… The name to start with: “Placidus Penyston”. What a name and total enigma. No known clockmaker of this name recorded anywhere that I can find… recent long thread on NAWCC about this with no conclusion. Perhaps links to Penistone, Yorkshire? “Placidus” may not even be a name, perhaps some political or social comment the meaning of which is now long forgotten. The clock. A fantastic looking thing, a real statement piece. A very tall and shallow case with extensive carving – normally a Victorian trait but not always… certainly carries the weight of many years. Compared to the majority of longcase clocks the dial is a strange mixture of madness and magic! Beyond the conventional hour, minute, and subsidiary seconds functions there are extra apertures for date (common), moon (‘penny’ moon variety showing phases including dark moon – fairly rare), time of high water (very rare) and month of the year (off the rarity scale). The date, moon and tide/ high water dials are all connected and driven from the front of the movement. The month dial has no mechanical connection at present but the shaped ‘channels’ on the rear of the disk provide a tempting thought that such a drive may have once existed. It is probably more sensible to accept that it is a manual adjustment, date dials require manual adjustment anyway for months with less than 31 days. The movement is of the knopped/ finned variety and clearly very old, probably earlier 1700s. Again there is discussion on NAWCC as to whether the clock was originally of 30 hour duration and converted to 8 day at some point with a very old movement. Originally I thought that it was an older clock that had been ‘Victorianised’ but with hindsight a Victorian improver would have most likely used a contemporary movement rather than one which would have been 150+ years old at the time. The weights are also of the brass-cased lead variety, probably original to the movement. So… lots of questions, not so many clear-cut answers perhaps but as I said before a fascinating and thoroughly thought provoking clock. In more practical terms it works well and appears to have been regularly maintained by previous owners. The silvering on the dial and subsidiaries is generally ok, a couple of small marks here and there. The seconds ring is noticeably duller… I would be happy to have the silvering re-done if required but it might look too new then? The case is ok, some shrinkage cracks. The height and shallowness make it less sturdy than most cases so fixing to the wall would be recommended. The door lock has its key and works fine. Dimensions are: height 86 inches, the moulding at the top of the hood is the widest and deepest part being 20 inches by 10.5 inches, the rest is smaller/ shallower. Viewing and collection are welcome. I can deliver and setup to mainland UK within 300 miles of BA22 (Somerset) for £85. Overseas shipping by established antiques carrier, please contact me for a quote. Condition: Fantastic looking clock, a real statement piece! 8 day movement works well. All dial functions move freely. Moon, tide and date functions have working drive from movement. No mechanical connection to month of year dial present but may have always been manual..., Age: Antique, Pre-1900, Type: Longcase/ Grandfather Clock, Features: 8-Day, Clock Type: Longcase/ Grandfather Clock
