Antique and vintage items make nicer than new gifts THE ITEM This good size fan-shaped glass posy bowl is pure Art Deco with its etched leaping deer or  antelope, which is synonymous with 1930s design (e.g. Susie Cooper) As Art Deco enthusiasts, it has been part of our personal collection for many years and was once identified by an Antiques Roadshow expert as possibly having Scandinavian origins (e.g. Sweden) but more likely Bohemian (e.g. Czech). We think its attractiveness is driven by its simplicity and unusual shape. We have never seen another. We have loved owning it, but down-sizing has become essential and we need to find it another home. We have described it as hand-blown after much discussion about whether it might be moulded. We have convinced ourselves that it is hand-blown because of the remarkable tactile smoothness of the base, which we think is, in effect, a highly polished pontil. Also, the heavy circular base is slightly larger on one side than the other; this would be unlikely with glass out of a precisely fashioned mould. Photographs: Note, like all glass this piece posed a photographic challenge in order to capture the etched deer. A couple of the images have a yellowy tinge which is the result of late natural sunlight. CONDITION It is in very good condition without chips, or scratchescracks. PRICING Whenever possible our asking prices are based on either our knowledge of the genre or on what similar pieces have been sold for on the international market, rather than what some sellers are asking, which are usually two very different things!
