You won't find these frosted Uranium glass specimens on sale from anyone else, as they have been made by the Mad Nuclear Scientists; we make the Uranium glass specimen ourselves from carefully selected Uranium glass.

Know what you are buying before you buy!

It is very important that you read the entire listing before buying so that you know what you are buying, and are sure this is what you want or need, so, please read the listing and if you have any questions, please ask before you buy.

What you will receive.

You will receive two frosted Uranium glass specimens, one of which has a high Uranium content and one with a low Uranium content; and one free! UV LED keyring light.

What kind of Uranium glass is used?

There are many varieties of Uranium glass, some contain only a small amount of Uranium and others can contain quite a lot. Typically Uranium glass contains from about 2% to as much as 25%, though most Uranium glass you will come across is closer to the lower end. The Uranium glass in these specimens has been carefully selected to be of a high and consistent quality; one specimen has a high Uranium content, the other a lower Uranium content. Also, we have chosen glass that has little or no other compounds added, so that the colour imparted to the glass by the Uranium is not masked. In daylight the glass specimen with the high Uranium content is a yellow green colour typical of the Uranyl ion, and in good sunlight you can see clearly how the fluorescence of the Uranyl ion affects its colour, becoming a vivid yellow green, in a darkened room and using a UV light source you will be able to see how bright the fluorescence is, the specimen with the low Uranium content appears a pale green colour (usually from dissolved iron), though in strong sunlight it is possible to see a hint of yellow, in darkness the low Uranium content specimen still exhibits the typical yellow-green fluorescence of the Uranyl ion though to a lesser extent.

So what can you do with it?

As part of an element collection:

If you have just started a periodic table of elements collection, or you are already building a collection and are looking to represent Uranium, this is an ideal and safe way to do just that. Uranium glass has another advantage - because the Uranium dissolved in the glass is in the form of what is called the Uranyl ion (oxidation state 6), the glass exhibits a beautiful yellow green fluorescence under ultra violet light, (i.e. sunlight). This yellow green fluorescence is a good indicator that glass may contain Uranium, though not proof - just because a glass sample reacts to UV light does not mean it contains Uranium and there is a lot of glass advertised for sale as Uranium glass just because of its colour or the seller claims it has been UV tested.

As a Geiger counter check source:

May be! depending on the type of detector you are using, if you have a sufficiently sensitive device you will be able to detect emissions coming from the specimen with the higher Uranium content, however, the Uranium glazed pottery we sell would be a much better choice if it is primarily a check source you are looking for . That said, with the proper instrument you will be able to detect alpha, beta and gamma emissions from the sample but it does need to be a sensitive instrument and  to detect alpha particles must also have an alpha window. Although Uranium and a lot of its progeny are alpha emitters, all but the alpha emissions coming from the very surface of the glass are blocked as alpha particles have very poor penetrating power even though they carry a lot of kinetic energy. Beta particles coming from Uranium decay products are detectable and although they have more penetrating power than the alpha particles they are greatly attenuated by the glass.

What readings can you expect from a Geiger counter?

As described above you may be able to use the specimen with the higher Uranium content as a Geiger counter check source; with the right instrument, it is primarily designed as a collectable however. You may find that the device you are using does not show any reading above background, or, only a slight elevation, if this is the case the device you are using is simply not sensitive enough. It is not possible for us to say what readings you can expect to get, if any. One thing to bear in mind is this, is the instrument you are using actually working?

We tested the emissions using the following devices.

Example 1: using a  Canberra BSP-100A large area beta scintillation probe connected to a Canberra ADM-300 survey meter we get a reading of approximately 500 counts/minute on a 4.5g specimen.

Example 2: using a GQ Electronics GMC - 300 and with the specimen resting over the just visible probe window on the front panel we get a reading of approximately 375 counts/minute on the same 4.5g specimen (we had to give this device a couple of minutes to settle to its final count as they are very slow).

In all cases the background count was deducted.

These are examples to be used a rough guide only.

Fluorescence (glow):

Uranium glass does not glow on its own in the dark; it does however fluoresce with an eerie yellow green glow under UV light. How brightly the glass will glow depends on a number of factors -  the amount of Uranium dissolved in the glass is a big factor, other things that affect the glow are the other substances, if any, that are added to the glass to modify the colour and opacity.

The fluorescence of these specimens can be demonstrated and compared in the dark using the free LED UV keyring light supplied.

Shipping times.

This is important, products being shipped internationally can take much longer to be delivered in some cases than the delivery times ebay states, the delivery times given by ebay are based on Royal Mail's estimated delivery time to the target country NOT the recipient, once the shipment has arrived in the target country it has to clear that country’s border controls/customs before it is handed over to that country’s postal system for sorting and delivery.

We have absolutely no control over other country’s customs/border controls or postal system or how long it may be in their system.

Customs are perfectly within their rights to open any packages and inspect them and we have no control over this.

We also would like to point out that you are responsible for any additional import duties/taxes on the items.

Some country’s border control/customs can take up to 45 days to clear items.

You should also check to see if there are any delays or issues with your country’s postal system that may cause additional delays, and please bear in mind that at busy times it can take even longer for post to arrive for example as Christmas approaches.

If you are an international customer and are not willing to be patient with delivery times and understanding of the fact that we are at the mercy of your country’s customs/border control and postal system, then please do not order.

Why all of this, we try our best to give a good professional service and most people understand the issues involved, but some don’t or won't, and spoil the ebay experience.

So from the MAD nuclear scientists, thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
