United Ancient Order of Druids, Hull 1892.. A huge, heavy & stunning-looking Victorian masonic incense burner bearing a sterling silver presentation shield relating to the United Ancient Order of Druids in Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. One of a Kind! I cannot overstate how imposing this item is & it would dominate any display! It weighs in just short of 10kg at 9.4 kg and is a whopping 48 cm high (please bear this in mind when looking at the photos). It is likely that the incense burner was created from a salvaged newell post from a much earlier age, probably from a large country estate. It is made of solid polished hardwood, possibly walnut or mahogany. Handles have been crafted & attached & the top has had copper mountings fitted to create an incense burner. As can be seen from the photos the lid lifts off to reveal a shallow burning dish below. The main wooden structure has been beautifully hand-carved featuring a floral decoration & fluting. Round wooden studs have also been added as further decoration. To the front of the burner a large sterling silver shield has been attached which is beautifully engraved: "Presented by BROTHER BARNEY BARNETT To No 805 Brunswick Lodge UNITED ANCIENT ORDER OF DRUIDS. HULL DISTRICT. JANY. 18. 1892". Overall Weight: 9.4 kg. Height: 48 cm. Circumference of Centre (excluding handles): 96 cm. Diameter of Base: 23 cm. Sterling Silver Shield: Dimensions: 85 mm x 70 mm. Hall Mark: Birmingham 1891. Maker's Mark: T & J Bragg Ltd. United Ancient Order of Druids: A fraternal organisation founded in England in 1833 after a schism with the Ancient Order of Druids. Summary: Anyone looking for a unique & imposing trophy for their display cabinet or study will struggle to find a better item than this! It is a one-off unique piece with a direct connection to the United Ancient Order of Druids. The conversation piece to end all conversation pieces! Good luck!
