Item:116064102113Oil Painting Black Bull Hammersmith London Georgian House 1930s 1940s signed art. Oil Painting Black Bull Hammersmith London Georgian House 1930s 1940s signed An historic painting showing part of the London's lost history. The oil on board shows 269 King Street, Hammersmith, a Georgian house which in the early part of the twentieth century was used as the office of law firm Bull and Bull. Above the door is an historic figure of Hammersmith - the Black Bull. The Black Bull originally was made in Suffolk in the early 1800s by James Pulham and Son of Woodbridge and it was to become a London landmark. It was made for the Black Bull Inn, a coaching inn mentioned in Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens, at 122a Holborn in London and remained outside the inn building until it was demolished in 1905. The black bull was then rescued by M.P. Sir William Bull who took it to Hammersmith and mounted it above the Georgian entrance of his firm of solicitors Bull and Bull at 269 King Street. It remained there until the Georgian house was sadly demolished in the early 1950s. Today the black bull statue is still in Hammersmith on a modern plinth in front of a closed down pub at 257 King Street - the Hammersmith Society hope it will be moved to a more appropriate setting. The oil painting is on board and is signed White. It probably dates from the 1920s to the 1940s. The empty atmosphere of the street is reminiscent of the urban landscapes of Algernon Newton of the inter-war years. It is 20½ tall and 16.2 inches wide. From the edges I can tell it was framed once upon a time. A page on the Hammersmith Society's website helped me to research this listing. There is some paint loss to the very edges from when it was framed, otherwise it is in very good condition and should look striking when the next owner frames it.
